Immediate Health Effects

Immediate effects are things that you wouldn’t have otherwise associated with a poor IAQ.

For example, eye, nose, or throat irritation are common symptoms of poor IAQ. Even headaches, dizziness, and fatigue have been the result of poor IAQ.

These symptoms are sometimes similar to those from colds or other vial diseases, so it is extremely important to pay attention to the time and place when those symptoms occur.

For example, if they fade or go away when you leave an area, then you know to look into improving the IAQ of that area.⁣⁣

Identifying the short term affects and correcting for poor IAQ are so important because according to the EPA, after prolonged or repeated periods of exposure, poor IAQ has been linked to severely debilitating or even fatal cases of respiratory disease, heart disease and cancer.

A very scary prospect for someone like me that spends most of the day behind a desk or being in the northeast where we spend most of the winter escaping the cold to hibernate indoors.⁣⁣

Funny enough, an indoor air system that doesn’t bring in enough outdoor air is a problem. That is because the outdoor air works to dilute the amount of gases and particles emitted from indoor sources.⁣⁣

Allergies Suck

For me, I tend to be more sensitive to these pollutants and can suffer from serious nose and eye irritation. So no matter what, I make sure to change my furnace air filter on schedule. However, not all air filters are made equally.

Sometimes the differences between particle filtering is unclear from filter to filter. The better filters are expensive and you normally have to buy a multi-pack just to get the individual cost to a reasonable price. ⁣⁣

That’s why I was so impressed when I found Second Nature, the filter quality is high, the cost is reasonable and it can be delivered to me on my schedule (monthly).

They offer different grades of filters, but I opted for the Catch All (SuperAllergen) because of my allergies. I also go with the highest filtration because if you read what the other filters can’t filter out, you would be disgusted.⁣⁣

Do it for more than the health benefits, regularly changing your air filter helps prevent against costly HVAC repairs, because it protects the system from getting clogged.
